I'm not gonna lie.... if you asked me on Monday how I was feeling about my trip I'd have told you I was more scared than anything else. I was told I'd be camping on "Snake Island". There is nothing that ruins my idillyic view of island life faster than the thought of SNAKES....poisonous ones at that! Imagine my relief when I found the "real" name of the island to be "Large Angry Lion Island"..... what a relief!
Learning a bit more about our itinerary has helped ease my fears...a little! It's more of a moment by moment thing. I'm learning that my mind can run out of control quickly if I don't reign it in at the first stressful thought of unknown. I once received a text from a friend with this item at the top of the "To Do" list. 1. Renew mind. These days it's permanently at the top!

The Official Countdown....
The countdown
to Sierra Leone 2012 has officially begun! Today marks exactly 30 days until I
depart on my adventure....and adventure it will be. This is a
short but important list of details we have to secure in the next 30
days.
*Where we will be staying
*If we'll be staying in someone's mud hut OR sleeping on the ground. (Allow me a moment of honesty when I say these 2 options make Motel 6 look appealing. Sleeping on the ground in a land of poisonous snakes doesn't exactly sit well in my mind....It's one thing to camp at Smithville Lake and an entirely different ball game when you're in a country with deadly slithering creatures. I'll keep you posted on how that turns out!)
*Where we will get clean water to drink
*The food situation: Cliff Bars or Cliff Bars?!?!
* What specific villages we will be traveling to. (This depends on the amount of rainfall they have received once we get in country. The rainy season begins the first part of May each year so any rain received prior to our arrival could slow us down. We're hoping we have access to some 4 wheel drive vehicles once we arrive.
*Oh and I have yet to receive my Visa from the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington D.C. I can't get access into the country until I have that small piece of documentation.
